Tomorrow it's going to be a high of sixteen degrees in New York and I am thinking about how to burrow comfortably in my apartment. But in other parts of the world when it is cold, people go outside. Ha! What a concept.

We received an email from our friend Dick Hofland in Amsterdam; we stayed with the Hoflands when we went to Amsterdam in October. He reports that it is cold now in the Netherlands too, and he sent these pictures of himself: a Dutchman skating on frozen canals in Holland -- romantic, no?

    The ice skating looks fun....
    but the cold weather doesn't.
    On the West Coast we've
    been having a crazy heat wave
    for a week...everything is
    blooming (but it shouldn't be)...
